Great essay. I'm a graduate English student at UAB, and I also have TS. Mine isn't nearly as severe as yours, but I've had physical tics since I was little. People don't even realize I have them anymore, the tics are that subtle. But you're right, lifting helps tremendously. Any time I get in a good workout, my entire body feels calm, my mind feels at ease, and my tics disappear for a while. Hence, I understand this very well: "I could suddenly look at myself and say: 'You do whatever I tell you to, now shut up and get to it'."
This brought back some dark/happy times to be sure. It was rather lovely to see you write about it in this manner, and lovelier still to see the progress. Bien fait.
